The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
