On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious start to his term.

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

A Costly Platform
Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

- A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Dynamics
The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.
Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
