The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Spurs box.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
